Important Observations to Make on the RVOT and LVOT views

left ventricular outflow (LVOT)

• The aorta is the "stem of the apple"
  • ​​This is to say that the aorta arises centrally within the heart.
• The anterior wall of the aorta is continuous with the interventricular septum
  • ​​This is the critical observation
    

Right ventricular outflow (RVOT)

• The pulmonary artery is more anterior in the chest than the aorta
• The pulmonary artery is the branching vessel
• The right pulmonary artery passes directly behind and touches the aorta

• The pulmonary artery and aorta should be approximately the same size
