Hydrops Fetalis Part 1
Take Home Points
findings of hydrops fetalis
- Fluid identified in 2 fetal compartments
- Peritoneal (Ascites)
- Pleural (Pleural Effusion)
- Pericardial (Pericardial Effusion)
- Amniotic Fluid (Polyhydramnios)
- Placenta (Placental Edema/Thickening)
- Skin (Skin edema)
why is placental edema/thickening important?
- This can be a sign of impending mirror syndrome where the mother can develop symptoms "mirroring" the fetus
Subtypes of hydrops
- Immune
- Due to antibodies against fetal blood cells from the mother
- Most common is Rh Incombatibility
- Non-Immune
- Cardiac: Cardiomyopathy, Cardiac tumor, Severe cardiac malformation, arrhythmia
- Genetic: Chromosomal anomalies
- Fetal Anemia: Parvovirus, alpha-thalasemia, fetal hemorrhage
- Infection: TORCH
- Twins: Twin-twin transfusion, TRAP syndrome
- Thoracic masses: CPAM, CDH, Teratomas
- Vascular tumors: Sacrococcygeal teratoma, Placental chorioangioma
- Idiopathic
