Mastering the Fetal Great Vessels - Part 1
Avoid The "Twisting Your Hand Approach"
Avoid The "Twisting Your Hand Approach"
what is the twist your hand approach?
- The LVOT is sometimes known as the long axis view of the heart and the RVOT is sometimes known as the short axis view (these names don't really help us to know what plane of section they represent)
- The LVOT is the path that the blood takes as it is ejected from the heart, travelling between the interventricular septum and the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve.
- This path is an inclined/angled up view of the heart. In a fetus that can assume multiple positions, again, this is not an easily repeatable view
- So what does this cause people to do?
- Twist their hand around until it looks like it does in the book!!
- To be successful, we want to avoid this and learn the techniques to accurately and repeatably obtain these views!
