Teaching File - Disappearing Twin
Take Home Points
psychological implications
- Keep in mind that telling a patient that there is a disappearing twin can have lasting psychological implications. That is not to say that it is incorrect to do so, but just to remember that there are ramifications.
gestational sac terminology
- The term "chorionic sac" is actually a better term than gestational sac
- This can also help to remember the appropriate terminology with mono/dichorionic pregnancies
Cornual ectopic vs. pregnancy in horn of bicornuate uterus
- Key point is that there must always be myometrium surrounding the sac completely in orthogonal planes
- Cornuals also tend to "bulge out" and distort the normal contour of the uterus more than bicornuate pregnancies
